Easter Sunday cannot be suspended or postponed
Easter Sunday celebrates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. No date is given for these events, we know from the Gospel and from historians at the time that a man called Jesus was crucified in Jerusalem during the Jewish Feast of Passover. The Jewish Passover is celebrated in the Springtime of the year. For the early Christians every Sunday was the day to remember the death and resurrection of Jesus, so from the beginning they gathered each Sunday, they recalled what Jesus taught them and did what he asked them to do at the Last Supper, they took bread and wine blessed and broke it and shared it among them. Soon Sunday became established as the Lord’s Day, the new Sabbath for coming together of the Community, to pray, listen to God’s Word and to share in the Eucharist, the Sacrament of Thanksgiving.
The early Church observed Easter on various dates, A Council held at Nicaea in 325 AD formally established the practice which we now follow. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. (Equinox falls on March 20th)
Therefore Easter can fall anytime between March 22nd and April 25th. While the date may change from year to year, our faith remains fixed and always the same.
Christ has died, Christ has Risen, Christ will come again.
